A yellow-gold and diamond claddagh ring that once belonged to notorious Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger has sold for $23,000 at auction.

The U.S. Marshals Service auctioned items belonging to Bulger and his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Saturday, WCVB.com reports. The personal effects of the couple were confiscated from Bulger’s apartment in Santa Monica, CA, when he was found by the FBI in 2011.

Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the families of Bulger’s murder victims.

Other times for auction included a replica Stanley Cup ring, watches, clothing, and sneakers that belonged to Bulger. A hat worn by the gangster sold for $6,400.

Bulger, now 86, fled Boston in 1994 on a tip from a corrupt FBI agent. He spent 16 years on the run before the FBI caught up with him in Santa Monica.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said authorities did not want to glamorize Bulger but hoped the auction raises as much funds as possible for his victims. The sale raised more than $100,000 for the victims' families.
