Commuters and tourists simply trying to get from here to there on Monday night were in for a big surprise, as Bono and U2 showed up at the Grand Central subway station in New York City for an impromptu performance.

A crowd gathered on the platform for the S train and watched in amazement as a group of buskers turned out to be one of the best-selling bands of all time.

They performed “Beautiful Day,” “Angel of Harlem,” and one of their new singles, “Song for Someone.”

The Dublin lads are in New York for a week of filming with the "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon, the New York Post reports.

Six months ago, when frontman Bono was badly injured in a cycling accident in Central Park, U2 had been about to begin a week with Fallon as the show’s resident band.

Following Bono’s accident, in which he sustained a facial fracture near his eye, three separate fractures of his left shoulder blade and a fracture on his left upper arm, they were forced to cancel the run.

Bono, dressed very much like Kate Hudson in “Almost Famous” (right down to his new strawberry blonde hair), seemed to be in top form on Monday.

With Jimmy Fallon, he had already filmed a skit finding the humor in his collision.

Bono is no stranger to busking – in Dublin it's a Christmas Eve tradition to see him playing on Grafton Street. He was unable to do so this past Christmas due to his injuries.
