Monck Street in Wexford Town has become the first fully covered street in Ireland as part of a €1.5 million redevelopment.

The entire 80-meter length of Monck Street in Wexford Town is now under a retractable roof canopy, breathing new life into one of the town's busiest nightlife locations.

Dignitaries, including Mayor of Wexford John Hegarty, arrived in Wexford Town on Wednesday to finally cut the ribbon on the redevelopment, which endured numerous setbacks and missed deadlines.

"I welcome this very unique addition to Wexford town," Hegarty said at the ribbon cutting on Wednesday, April 17.

"I hope it is something that will add to the experience for locals and visitors alike as they come to enjoy this vibrant and thriving part of our town."

Monck Street, one of the busiest streets in Wexford Town, has been pedestrianized and utterly transformed as part of a redevelopment scheme.

Eddie Taaffe, the acting Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, said he hoped the scheme would "lead the way" in making town centers across the country more vibrant and more attractive for tourists to visit.

"We are particularly thankful to the National Transport Authority and Failte Ireland for the support they have provided in turning this vision into a reality for all to enjoy," Taafe said.

With Wexford set to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann for the next two years, Taafe predicts that Monck Street will become a "vibrant and popular" destination among festival goers.

Brian O’Flynn, Head of Ireland's Ancient East, said the redevelopment of Monck Street will help meet Fáilte Ireland's objective of keeping tourists in the region for longer.

"Wexford is an important part Ireland’s Ancient East and we’re pleased to further enhance this destination with the newly opened Monck Street Outdoor Dining Infrastructure, funded by Fáilte Ireland’s Outdoor Dining Enhancement Scheme and developed in partnership with Wexford County Council," O'Flynn said.
