A new survey form Hotel.Com has found that the price of a hotel room in Ireland went down by 17 percent last year.

According to the Web site’s hotel price index, which surveys hotel prices in major destinations across the world, the average cost of an Irish hotel room in the final quarter of last year was $120. On average a hotel cost $146 for the same period in 2007.

The survey found that Ireland experienced the largest drop in hotel prices in the Eurozone countries and the third largest drop of hotel prices in Europe.

Although Dublin has a reputation for being a very expensive city, it is not, surprisingly, the most expensive Irish city when it comes to hotel prices. That title belongs to Galway, where it is even more expensive to stay in than Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, Barcelona, Munich and London. A room in Galway will, on average, cost you $174 a night.

In fact, Dublin hotel rooms, at $116 per night on average, a decrease of 20 percent from 2007, are even less expensive than the national average. The survey said that this makes “the Irish capital remarkably good value for travelers looking for cheaper hotel stays within the Eurozone.”

Limerick is the cheapest Irish city for hotel rooms, at $102 on average, while Cork saw the biggest drop in last year with hotel rooms down 21% from $170 to $134.
