Electronic cigarettes taken off shelves in Ireland

Electronic cigarettes have been removed from the shelves of Irish pharmacies due to concerns about the safety of the products.

The device allows people to smoke in areas where tobacco is banned and were invented by a
Chinese pharmacist. They offer the sensation of smoking but have no tobacco or tar. However concerns were expressed that the cigarettes could contain harmful chemicals.

The EU must now establish if the device can be classified as a medical or tobacco products.

I have tried E Cigarette and i think its the best and healthier alternative to conventional cigarette.

I think Captain Con is right - it's the anti-smoking fanatics who want e-cigs off the market because they think it's a "gateway" to smoking. Never mind the people who have been able to quit or cut down because of e-cigs. Plus, you can find e-cigs made in America that don't have the propylene glycol.
Found 'Chompix to be the best. Not a nicotine replacement but acts on the brain to suppress cravings. After 40 years I've gone from 40 a day to zero for the past five weeks. Feel great and pocket a lot healthier too. Mind you as the great Bill Hicks said, don't get too smug. Non smokers die too you know! Ronan G Ronan Gallagher
Congratulations rothenbj! I can't imagine how difficult it was for you to quit. Good job!
43 year ex-smoker, 2-3 pack a day here. Tried all the "approved" methods to quit. Got talked into trying an E Cig over two years ago, first one was lousy. Got on the e-cigarette-forum and learned about the good, bad and ugly. Found a good one and spent the next 6-7 months at around 6 smokes a day. Finally, a year and a half ago I became an ex-smoker. As to the comment about placebo effect, that first study was done by a VCU scientist that didn't know what he was working with. They are not vaped the same as you smoke. There is a learning curve. I can only agree with the Irish Pharmacy policy if they don't sell cigarettes there. If not, it's a total joke. By the way, the good E Cigs don't look anything like the real ones.
Kerryman201, they are actually pretty useful, at least for some. They simulate smoking, however the vapor the electronic cigarette emits does not contain the 4000 chemicals or tar found in the smoke of conventional cigarettes. As far as nicotine goes, one can choose cartridges of various strength, from full, medium, light to zero, and there is a myriad of flavors to choose from. It's actually a pretty clever product. My daughter tried the new ones, she did not give up smoking but has helped her to cut down a lot, I always took it that items sold in a chemist ( pharmacy ) had to be tested before sale.
These things are utterly useless and if I remember right, don't even deliver a dose of nicotine (it's apparently all placebo)
I'm willing to bet that there are no harmful chemical issues. It'll be the health nazis objecting to something that even looks like smoking.
I've tried several electronic cigarette brands and find them useful to avoid odor and save money. See http://ecigwerks.blogspot.com/ for more info.
