Activists for the undocumented Irish were in poor spirits Wednesday in the wake of Republican Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts.

However, as the polls closed last night, a seasoned immigration campaigner told me that immigration reform was by no means dead.

"We always knew we would need support from both sides of the Senate," she said.

"This just means we have one more vote to pick up."

Immigration reform needs support from both sides of Congress, and a new survey from America's Voice shows that the public wants immigration reform.

It's the politics which keep getting in the way.

Just look at the numbers from the poll which was carried out by the Benenson Strategy for America’s Voice:

89 percent supported increasing security on the U.S.-Mexico border
89 percent supported cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants
And then

87 percent supported a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, provided they registered with the government and met requirements like working, paying taxes, and learning English.

An even-bigger statement from the survey showed that the overwhelming majority (67 percent) picked legalization over deportation (28 percent).

The poll asked voters to select one of the two following statements.

"We’d be better off if people in the United States illegally left the country because they’re taking jobs Americans need."

OR

"We’d be better off if illegal immigrants became legal taxpayers and paid their fair share.
By 67-28, voters chose legalization over deportation."

Voters were also asked what the government should do with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.

Again, the overwhelming majority, 66 percent, chose a path to citizenship.

Just 22 percent thought the 12 million should be deported, while 11 percent backed some form of temporary non-citizen visa.

The overwhelming majority, 66 percent, thought the best way to deal with the situation was to require the illegal immigrants to register, meet certain conditions, and then allow them to apply for citizenship.

Immigration reform is only a tough political issue because the politicians make it tough.

Scott Brown's election is no reason to see immigration reform dumped from the Congressional agenda.

America supports immigration reform. Congress, make it so.

Our Political Leaders here in Massachusetts break the law over and over again, Very seldom are they prosecuted. They were born here and help Lawyers become Judges. The laws to-day are a bit more strict than when Pat Rileys ancestors landed. At that time it was legal to post a sing "NO IRISH NEED APPLY...ergo Catholics.
Don't expect any sympathy from Scott Brown on immigration reform. He is just one neighborhood shy of "being to the manner born. Driving his pick up Truck while campaigninr was another ploy which worked out for him. There is not very much known about him from the voters of Massachusetts. How many people knew for instance that he owned three rental propertry buildings on Commonwealth Avenue.
Enforce the immigration laws and prosecute the employers who hire illegals and the illegal immigration problem will disappear. It's nonsense to reward people who have broken the law, however slight.
Why should people who broke the law to enter this country be allowed a path to citizenship....NO WAY. Enforce immigration law....did the dear Ms. Fincham take her survey in Washington Heights or the Bronx. ALL illegal immigrants should be deported and have them submit an application to go through the legal process of immigration. I did.
You can continue to going to church and light candles, but, there will not be an amnesty. You can thank Teddy, and his 1965 immigration overhaul, for your problems. I, for one, hope that Teddy is bruning in hell. However, he is probably have a stiff drink with the devil instead. Like Brown said so well-- the Senate belongs to the people- it is not the personal property of the Kennedy Mob.
Looking at these comments you should realize what people want. Immigration enforcement!! I am of Irish decent and proud of it and even more proud to be an American. I think you need to go to go back to Ireland and promote illegal immigration there. Lets see how poular your views would be there lol.
Was this poll taken at Coakley HQ or in Juarez Mexico? Fresh back from working on glabal warming statistics are we? What a grand idea! We should let in 30 million illegal aliens into this country to help the 50,000 illegals from Ireland! Did the the same people who sold you that one tell you that if you spring a leak in the bottom of your boat that you should immediately punch another hole in the bottom to let that water out? Maybe two or three more holes so it will empty faster?
Where do you get your information? The American people want the immegration laws ENFORCED! We have 26 million Americans out of work and 20 million illegal aliens holding the jobs American should have. It's time for these illegal aliens to get back to their own country where they belong with their families. NO AMENSTY!
You must be getting your poll numbers from the joke of a district represented by Luis Gutierrez. Your numbers are outrageous, if Americans supported amnesty as you say then States would not be passing legislation to deal with the issues themselves. I am sitting laughing as I write, you are as loony as Nancy Pelosi.
Prior to 1965, the Irish never had any problems immigrating to the US legally and in very large numbers. But 1965 was the year liberal Democrats, led by Bobby and Teddy Kennedy, started complaining that there wasn't enough "diversity" and "multiculturalism" in the United States and that we needed to "reform" our immigration laws. So when the Irish immigrants who can't get visas today wonder what went wrong?, let them remember 1965 and their "friends" in the Democratic party.
Immigration laws as we have today need to be reinforced. In 1986 we legalized all the illegals in the US and still we have the same problems today. This was suppose to solve all of our immigration problems for then and in the future. Today nothing has changed and if we legalize all illegals in a few years we will be doing the same so why have closed borders??
Immigration reform is troll bait for midwestern OAP's with nothing better to do with their lives than post misleading facts under anonymous screen names. GreyRider I am looking at you.
The last time Congress tried to jam through amnesty in June 2007, a Rasmussen Poll found: Among the public, there is a bi-partisan lack of enthusiasm for the Senate bill. It is supported by 22% of Republicans, 23% of Democrats, and 22% of those not affiliated with either major party. It is opposed by 52% of Republicans, 50% of Democrats, and 48% of unaffiliateds. http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/just_22_favor_stalled_immigration_bill
American Pulse Survey Results – November 2007 77% of Americans are against providing Educational Benefits to illegal aliens 82% of Americans are against providing Driver’s Licenses to illegal aliens 89% of Americans are against providing Business Licenses to illegal aliens 74% of Americans are against providing Job Training to illegal aliens 83% of Americans are against providing Housing Assistance to illegal aliens http://www.bigresearch.com/BIGamericanpulse.htm
07/05/2007 – Qualtrics survey software, a leader in the market research industry scanned all 50 states on the subject of immigration. The results showed 68 percent of respondents favor deportation as an answer to illegal immigration http://www.newswiretoday.com/news/20638/
