The Bog Band's Mitch Fanning

The new season for the Blarney Star concert series kicks off this week with more Marylanders coming north to Greenwich Village. Series producer Don Meade has invited the Bog Band led by founder fiddler Mitch Fanning, who leads the music educational programs for the O’Neill-Malcom branch of Comhaltas in the Capital District. Joining him are young up and coming piper and flute player, Patrick Armstrong, who is a student at Fordham University, and Conor Hearn on guitar, and perhaps some other guest artists who may turn up on the night. Two sets starting at 9 p.m. at NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House at One Washington Mews on lower Fifth Avenue. Visit www.blarneystar.com .

No matter what the temperature this weekend, there is sure to be red-hot ceili dance music when another Cape Cod ceili weekend (IX edition) takes place at the New Irish Village in South Yarmouth. There are three ceilthe (Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon) with the lively Northeast Ceili Band based in Massachusetts, but also featuring special guest box wizard John Whelan. On Saturday there are ceili and set dancing lessons to help get you in the swing of things, and special packages are available at the inn. Check out capeirish.com/cccw9/homepage.html for more details.

This Saturday afternoon up in Orleans, John Whelan and accompanist Bill Black will present a 1 p.m. concert at a Brick Hill house concert. Call Dinah Mellin at 508-255-3864.
