Stephen Colbert pokes fun at Susan Boyle at Grammys

Bookmark and Share

Stephen Colbert made a name for himself early tonight by making comments about Susan Boyle at the Grammys.

Colbert's first remark was a slap at Boyle, stating that while Justin Timberlake had brought "Sexy Back," with his hit song of the same name Susan Boyle had pretty much destroyed all that image with her success.

Then he paid Susan a backhanded compliment saying said that record business was very lucky that a Scottish spinster with flat shoes like Susan had bailed out the industry this year with her astonishing success and album sales.

Leave it to Colbert to be controversial at Susan Boyle's expense.

People will twist his words to hear what they can handle. I agree with AnneRed: Susan IS sexy & Lady Gaga CAN sing. Get off your high horses people.
Colbert wasn't poking fun at Susan Boyle, who as he said just saved the music industry. He was seriously taking a poke at the Grammys for ignoring her success.
Susan IS sexy. Lady GaGa CAN sing. I wish folks would stop putting down these two women. It does not have to be one or the other.
Yep. Sexy is ok for a while but it does get a trival boring when too much in your face. And Oh boy have we had tooo much already ..go away . Except I think for young males or males of all ages for that matter come to think of it,they seem permanently wired for it.Thanks Susan for a breathe of fresh air.
Keith Urban rules.
I get you need a sense of humor to get it. Colbert is brilliant, to use an Irish used way too much in Ireland. Anywho, Susan Boyle absolutely slays the likes of Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and a lot of the junk that I heard last night. If Beyonce looked like Susan Boyle... wait for it....she would be a middling talent with her okay voice. Susan Boyle can sing. Lady Gaga...Cher meets Madonna and a great marketing team. Utter garbage. Will not have the longevity of the Beatles.
Tkvem33, a Boyle Award is a good idea.
Copied from ArielAZ: Colbert: “Congratulations to all of you, but what I want to know is why isn’t Susan Boyle here? I mean, she accomplished something huge this year. You all may have brought the “sexy” back, but she sent it away again. No thanks sexy, we’re just going with good singing this year. Yeah. Seriously, you may be cool here but this year your industry was saved by a 48 year old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes. So give it up for Susan Boyle! Congratulations Susan.”
Another Elaine Paige compliment? Perhaps you should send Stephen Colbert a card too expressing your sincere happiness at his support for Susan Boyle.
Well, I heard him. I THINK he was trying to compliment Susan and tell the beautiful people she was special; and brought lovely music back to the industry. BUT,Cobert, tho' he said "let's be serious here,' his compliment delivery, had no segue from comic to serious. The audience couldn't get whether he meant his compliment or not. Bad delivery Steve!
There's no joke to get.
You didn't get the joke did you? I guess you're one of the "cool" people who have sponsored the hijacking of the music industry. Stephen was poking fun at the audience who rely on lovely pyrotechnics, and self-applause to create an awards show. Celebrate celebrity. The attendees were very hip and trendy...there was even some talent...but you have to wait for the fireworks to end before you can hear the melody.
Some of these clever media-savvy people are too clever for their own good. His comments were seen as positive by some fans but negative by others. My mother often used to tell us "think before you speak. Make sure you say what you mean to say, not what other people think you meant to say". Didn't his mother tell him that?
Amy- nothing could be further from the truth and your article couldn't possible be more inaccurate. Please refer below to ArielAZ for an ACCURATE account of what Mr. Colbert said and then please do a little research on the man. After that, wipe the egg off your face.
The 'joke' fell flat with the audience.
I'm going to take a wild guess here, but I think someone who rolls her hips and says "Piercy Baby" is not someone who would consider the word "unsexy" a compliment. Amy Andrews is spot on. Everyone in my house was aghast as they listened to Stephen Colbert's backhanded compliment. He could have made his point without disparaging Susan Boyle.
First Niall O'Dowd misinterprets Elaine Paige's comments about Susan Boyle. Now Amy Andrews misinterprets Stephen Colbert's comments about Susan Boyle. Stephen was actually recognizing Susan Boyle’s contribution to music. He was honoring Susan’s genuine talent over the talent of those who rely on sexual image to boost their popularity. Does anyone at Irish Central actually read or listen to the material they discuss?
One of Susan Boyle's fansites has the video of Stephen Colbert's comments. http://www.susan-boyle.com/
I think someone needs to create a "Boyle" award for the person with the best talent, character, morals and fortitude not to give into the industry's demand for plastic surgery and skandals just to be popular. Man, I love Susan Boyle. What a breath of fresh air.
Thanks so much for this article! I was very annoyed at Colbert's comments. Susan looks great. Obviously he hasn't seen any photos of her in the last 9 months. She looked wonderful in her Copenhagen performance on the 30th. Joking about Susan's looks is inaccurate, out of date, and mean!!!
Colbert: “Congratulations to all of you, but what I want to know is why isn’t Susan Boyle here? I mean, she accomplished something huge this year. You all may have brought the “sexy” back, but she sent it away again. No thanks sexy, we’re just going with good singing this year. Yeah. Who's Stephen Colbert anyway???? Another case of professional jealousy if you ask me..:-) He made himself look bad, not Susan!!! So what's the number of selfish bigots who have grammys now?
I have it taped. Also, you can see his quote on http://newsroom.mtv.com/2010/01/31/grammy-awards-live-blog/ He said, "Justin Timberlake may have brought the sexy back, but Susan Boyle sent it away this year. Goodbye, sexy!" Then went on to give some compliments.
This is what Stephen said: "You may be the coolest people in the world. This year your industry was saved by a 48-year-old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes," said host Stephen Colbert, referring to Susan Boyle.
Even though I think you misunderstood Colbert's intention, thanks for coming to Susan's defense. She wasn't eligible for a Grammy due to the release date of her CD, but considering what she accomplished she could have least been asked to be a presenter. Would she have made the trip for that? Doubtful, but it still would have been nice if they had asked. The Brit Award committee are the ones that need to hang their heads in shame for not including her at all.
Sorry. I heard Colbert. He started off saying "Justin Timberlake may have brought the sexy back, but Susan Boyle sent it away this year. Goodbye, sexy!" That's insulting. Then, when he saw that the audience wasn't too thrilled, he started complimenting Susan Boyle. I think people should remember the whole remark, not just the ending.
Ms. Andrews, could you go back and listen again (it'll be on video somewhere)? Because Mr. Colbert's remarks were very complimentary, and if he missed on the "sensible shoes," it was very gentle and just for humor. His barb was where it was deserved, at the senseless and tasteless omission of the hands-down star of 2009.
I'm not sure what happened to my first comment but sorry if I am repeating myself. I think you have this article all wrong. Stephen Colbert is a huge fan of Susan Boyle and was not poking fun at her. That is his type of humor. At the end of his comments he told the audience "Let's give it up for Susan Boyle" and they applauded. He also said she saved the music industry. Not too controversial IMO. I have also been thanking him on twitter and I am a huge Susan Boyle fan.
WHAT? He was PRAISING her. He's Stephen Colbert... his praise comes with sarcasm and word plays. That's what he does. It was a HUGE compliment. He's getting loads of thanks on twitter for it from Susan fans.
