Clare Kambamettu (26), a psychologist, is the daughter of Dr Ravi Kambamettu, an Indian-born doctor in Kildare. Amazingly she is the second successive winner from the small town of Athy who moved to London in two years.
Last year's winner Charmaine Kenny also moved to London from Athy.
Born in Leeds, England, she returned to Ireland at age eight. Educated at Scoil Mhuire, Athy and University College Galway, Clare went on to do a Master’s Degree in Psychology at King’s College, London. Now working for the National Health Service, she plans to embark on further studies, having applied for a Phd in Clinical Psychology.
"It's been an absolutely amazing week," she said after she was announced the winner, "and what I've learned about the Rose of Tralee is that everything you think is going to happen, you just double it, and triple it, and add a million on to it and you get somewhere near what actually happens."
According to her mum, Breda, Clare decided to enter the competition when she saw an advertisement on her way home from work one evening.
“She had been attending a lot of very serious interviews and just decided that this would be a bit of fun,” said Breda,
The Rose of Tralee festival annually brings 100,000 visitors to the Kerry town for a week-long festival.
The show is shown live on Irish television over two nights with up to 1.5 million people viewing it. It is also broadcast via internet world-wide.

I would think that it would almost certainly be unlawful, or illegal, for the organisers of the Rose of Tralee Festival to exclude an Irish CITIZEN [ and an Irish passport-holder ], as she, a daughter possibly of an Irish mother and an Irish University graduate, almost certainly [ is ]. (Apologies.)

I am from England, and she is certainly Irish enough for me. She certainly sounds Irish to me.
Good for her, and good luck to her!

I know her and you wouldn't take her for anything else but Irish, including the accent.

She is pretty & obviously has some brains. I'm Irish-American (2nd generation in the US) and even I agree that it should be an "Irish" lass taking this title. If I were traveling over to Tralee for the festivities I would have been disappointed at this outcome. I seriously never even realized that "any female" could run fo this title....regardless of nationality. If she wanted to do a pageant then she should have done Miss Universe because it comprises all countries. And leave the Rose of Tralee to a born & raised "Irish" lass.....just my humble opinion!!

My surname is German, but I'm also Irish and very proud of my Irish heritage. What's in a name anyhow? She is not just some vacuous airhead with looks, she obviously is very intelligent and a true representation of the modern Irish woman.

That this cringe-making festival of Oirishness is still being held in the 21st century is an international embarrassment

Sorry but I feel that only an Irish lass should be the winner. By Irish, I mean only those born in and living in Ireland; not any U. S. girls should be permitted to enter even if they are Irish descent.

How do we define Irish? To me, this UCG graduate from Athy is surely more Irish than green beer swilling "Kiss Me I'm Irish" fools. To say "tsk, tsk" or "pity" - WHY? Is it because of the last name? What about the many Irish with Italian, last names - are they Irish? This well educated, beautiful woman was chosen above others because of her beauty and the fact that she is an outstanding example of a modern Irish woman. Congratulations, good luck, and well done to her!

The main charm of Ireland was its people. If people from everywhere are "Irish" then that particular charm no longer exists. Pity.
