Decision time for Brian Kelly

Notre Dame Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly has made it clear that his stud, all-American wide receiver Michael Floyd has been suspended indefinitely in light of his DUI infraction.

Just which wide out can step up their game to help replace Michael Floyd’s 79 receptions for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns last season remains to be seen.

Let’s take a look at the Notre Dame Receiving Corp for 2011:

Theo Riddick: Originally transitioning from running back, his numbers were impressive last year. He caught 40 balls for 3 touchdowns and 414 yards receiving. He has the leg up being a junior and bringing experience and an understanding of Brian Kelly’s spread offense to the table. Riddick has tremendous upside still. His production numbers could have been more robust had he not missed four games due to an injury.

TJ Jones like Riddick showed flashes of production last year. His numbers, 23 receptions for 303 yards and  3 touchdowns, were hampered by an injury that sidelined him for the last three games of the season.  His flexibility allows him to play in the slot or on the perimeter.

Senior Wide receiver Deion Walker had only one catch last year. The Notre Dame coaches, however, are impressed by his work ethic this offseason. They feel he can step his game up to the next level and take advantage of his size and speed.

Senior John Goodman (15 catches for 146 yards) adds age and experience to the wide receiving mix. Junior Robby Toma is a fast and elusive slot receiver who started 2 games and caught 14 passes for 187 yards. Sophomore Daniel Massa was Michael Floyd’s back up and pet project. He wound up as his back up after playing mostly on special teams and the scout team.

Michael Floyd will surely be missed and extremely difficult to replace. But the depth at wide receiver is only part of a strong overall spread offense for the Irish that should help Notre Dame continue its winning ways this upcoming season.
