James McClean, winger for the Republic of Ireland soccer team and Sunderland has signed with Wigan Athletic for over $1.5 million.

The 24-year-old Derry man moved to Sunderland from Derry City in 2011 and scored 11 goals in 70 games for the team.

On Wednesday he revealed on Twitter that he had completed his move. He could now be making his debut for Wigan in Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester United, at Wembley, in London.

McClean told Wigan's website, "This is a fantastic club. After speaking with the manager [Owen Coyle] I can't wait to meet the rest of the team, start training and hopefully make my debut very soon with the aim of helping us get back to the Premier League."

McClean, part of the Republic's squad at Euro 2012, has been capped 13 times and has enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League under the management of Martin O'Neill, with his form earning him a new three-year contract.

He is in Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad to face Wales in Cardiff next week, together with his new Wigan team-mate James McCarthy.
