The New York Ladies GAA team are traveling to Ireland again this week, to take on Wicklow in the replay of the All-Ireland junior football final, in Croke Park this Sunday.
For the second time in less than two weeks, the 28-players and their managerial entourage will make the trip across the Atlantic for the chance of a historic victory against Wicklow.
“We are all really looking forward to it now,” Catriona Brady, the vice captain of the ladies team told the Irish Voice.
“Initially we were all stressed and depressed by the thoughts of fundraising for the trip.
“Everyone was so exhausted; we were only back in New York 10 days even though there were two weeks between the two games.”
After the ladies drew (0-9/0-9) with Wicklow two weekends ago at Croke Park, there were fears the club would be unable to replay due the cost of traveling back and forth to Ireland. But upon their return organizers began fundraising efforts to secure their place in the final in Croke Park.
“The support we have got has been second to none,” Brady, originally from Monaghan, told the Irish Voice.
Members of the team and supporters have been busy fundraising for the trip in the last 10 days. Brady described a fundraising drive in Gaelic Park this past Sunday as “fantastic.”
“A couple of business men dropped in some checks also,” she added.
Now the focus is purely on winning and thoughts of all their loyal supporters will be on the players’ minds as they step onto the pitch on Sunday.
“We are just hoping to go out there and do better,” Brady said.
“The thoughts of having to come back empty handed doesn’t bear,” she concluded.
