A young Dubliner flew the flag for Ireland at the Olympics on Monday as Annalise Murphy made the perfect start to her bid for a sailing medal.

The 22-year-old from Rathfarnham won both her races on the opening day of action in her event at Weymouth.

She now leads the overall standings in the Laser Radial Class but was keeping her feet on the ground when she got back on shore.

Murphy told reporters: “I am delighted with it. But it is only the first day. There is a lot of racing ahead.”

Irish team-mates Peter O’Leary and David Burrows slipped from second to fifth spot overall in the Star class on day two of their sailing competition.

Badminton hope Scott Evans lost to world number one Lin Dan from China on his first and only day in action in London.

Hannah Craig made it through to the semi-finals in the Canoe Slalom Kayak K1 class.

In the pool, teenager Sycerika McMahon swam a personal best in the 200 metres individual medley but was eliminated.
