Rory McIlroy, the Irish golfer who branded Tiger Woods ‘ordinary,' has just splashed out over $2 million on a supercar, according to reports.

World golf’s leading young player splashed the cash this week on the incredible Bugatti Veyron worth some $2 milion.

McIlroy has spent almost a quarter of his career winnings at a Belfast car dealer after ordering the Veyron, rated as the ultimate boy’s toy.

A mid-engined supercar, the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is the most expensive modern car and the fastest road-legal car in the world, with a top speed of 431.07kmh.

It was named Car of the Decade for the Noughties by the renowned BBC television programme Top Gear.

The 21-year-old McIlroy, currently number eight in the world rankings has amassed well over $6million in prize money alone with millions more from commercial deals.

A source close to the multi-millionaire golfer told the Sunday Independent:

“Rory is really enjoying living the high life with his winnings and he’s always dreamed of getting a car like this.

“He has made a call to a motoring garage in Northern Ireland in the past fortnight and asked to arrange for the car to be ordered with all the extras included.

“There are only five of this particular model in the whole world and Rory is really pushing out the boat and wants to take delivery of the car by the summer.

“He’s really developed a taste for the high life since he started making big money on the golf tour.

“He’s very generous to his parents and he also likes to pamper himself, too, and live it up in the lap of luxury.”

The source added: “Recently he’s developed a taste for the expensive things. After each golf tournament he now flies by private jet rather than on commercial airlines.

“And he stays in the finest hotels everywhere he travels. But despite all that Rory is still a real home boy. He returns to County Down at least once a month and he wants to drive around in this car when he’s at home.

“It’s a little reward for himself for all the success he has had on the golf course and all the hard work and long hours he has put into his passion.

The golfer’s father Gerry has insisted that money is not a driving force behind his son’s success.

“Rory has never been interested in the money. It’s just been about playing golf,” McIlroy Senior was quoted as saying in the Sunday Independent.

“The most important thing for Rory is the world ranking.”
