Giovanni Trapattoni refused to even contemplate quitting after a last gasp equaliser for the Austrians at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night.

The visitors had taken the lead in the World Cup qualifier through Martin Hartin after a CIaran Clark mistake in the 11th minute.

But two Jon Walters goals, from a 25th minute penalty and then on the stroke of half-time, had the Irish ahead and dreaming of Brazil in 2014.

They held that lead until the second minute of added time when David Alaba's shot took a wicked deflection off Sean St Ledger to beat David Forde and break Irish hearts.

Trap said: “Why should I resign? Why? Why? Do you think we are Germany? England? We are Ireland.”

Striker Shane Long said afterwards:"It's fairly devastating, it would have been a big three points for us.

"We can't let it get us down too much. We will be disappointed with tonight but we will have to push on and get over it."
