Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni could be sacked as early as Wednesday according to reports in the Irish media.

The Italian is also facing a player’s revolt after defender Stephen Kelly quit the squad but was then persuaded to travel to the Faroe Islands.

Kelly walked out of the team’s Dublin base on Sunday morning, apparently after a row with assistant boss Marco Tardelli.

He only rejoined the squad in time for the flight to the Faroes after a series of phone calls with Trapattoni and FAI officials.

The Fulham defender could play against the Faroes on Tuesday night.

But that is now likely to be Trapattoni’s last game in charge as the FAI respond to last Friday’s 6-1 humiliation against Germany.

The Irish Independent quotes an FAI source who says an emergency board meeting to discuss his future will take place after the return from the Faroes with Trap likely to be sacked.

But Trapattoni told the Irish Sun: “I didn’t speak with the FAI. If they want to say ‘ciao’, it is no problem. But they know the job we are doing.”
