Notre Dame to battle Maryland in 2011 'home' game

Notre Dame has announced that the "Fighting Irish" will face Maryland at FedEx Field on November 12, 2011 for an Irish home game.

The game, at the home of the Washington Redskins in Landover, is part of Notre Dame's continuous promotion of the Irish brand.

The team has been scouting the country for locations where they can play an extra "home" game and promote the team and the college.

The first of these special "home" games was played Oct. 31, 2009 at Alamodome in San Antonio , where Notre Dame played Washington State.

The second will be played on Nov. 20, 2010 at the all-new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., where Notre Dame will take on Army.

Notre Dame are set to meet Arizona State in 2013 at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington, Texas.

But there is no date as yet for a 2012 game.

Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick said Maryland offered a great "institutional fit."

"The size of the FedExField facility alone will provide great access to tickets for fans of both Notre Dame and Maryland and the opportunity to spend a weekend in our nation¹s capitol should be a tremendous attraction."

Of course the Irish will be seeking a repeat of their only clash with Maryland when they demolished Maryland 20-0 at Giants Stadium on Aug. 31, 2002.

That was the first game in what came to be known as the Tyrone Willingham era.

Actually, the stadium itself has also been good to the Irish.

They defeated Navy 30-0 at what was then Jack Kent Cooke Stadium on Nov. 14, 1998.
