Arsenal progressed to their second Champions League semi-final thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over Villarreal.

The Gunners scored three times and kept a clean sheet despite the absence of William Gallas, Manuel Almunia and Gael Clichy.

Former Arsenal player Robert Pires played out the entire 90 minutes upon his return but, unsurprisingly, never looked like the player that was called “Bobby” by the Highbury fans.

Theo Walcott made the breakthrough only 10 minutes into the game thanks to a brilliant chip that beat the keeper.

Emmanuel Adebayor made it 2-0 on the hour mark with a fine finish after being set up by Robin van Persie.

Villarreal coach Pellegrini reacted immediately and made a double change in a desperate attempt to get back into the match, with Bruno Soriano and Mati Fernandes making way for Ariel Ibagaza and Nihat.

However, it was all over shortly afterwards Walcott won a controversial penalty. Sebastian Eguren was dismissed after receiving a second booking for protesting too much.

Van Persie converted the spot kick and opened the semi-finals’ doors for The Gunners.

The Gunners will face Manchester United in the semifinal, with the first leg due to be played at Old Trafford.
