Rory McIlroy says that thinking he was Tiger Woods caused collapse at US Masters
Caroline Wozniacki will be by his side as he competes for the title of world’s number one at the Honda Classic
The 22-year-old world champion golfer says that his attempts to copy Tiger Woods intimidating aura and “rip your head off” attitude were partially to blame for his collapse in the 2011 US Masters.
Although the Northern Irishman says Woods was keys o his rise in the golf world he said his attitude was the element that backfired in that fateful final round 80 at the Congressional.
“My whole attitude completely changed from the Saturday to the Sunday…It might have been the occasion got to me. To be honest, I think growing up watching Tiger all those years win those majors; he gives out this aura where everything is just so focused.
“It’s like, ‘I’m going to rip your head off’ on that first tee. I felt like that’s the way I needed to be to win a major. But I quickly found out that that isn’t me and that isn’t how I play my best golf.
“I was trying to be ultra-focused, tunnel-visioned, which just isn’t like me. I’m usually pretty chatty and sort of looking around and being quite relaxed about the whole thing.”
Greg Norman, the Australian golf legend, told AP, Caroline Wozniacki will give McIlroy the drive to win this week in Florida. He can also rely on her.
He said that the Danish tennis star "is probably the best partner Rory can have because she is physically strong, she has to be that way for her sport.”
