NY GAA: Gaelic Park previews

Gaelic Park in the Bronx, New York
Gaelic Park in the Bronx, New York

Saturday, July 11

5 p.m.: John Joe McGovern Final Rangers vs. St. Barnabas

A novel pairing for the first junior silverware of the season. Both New York squads are here on merit and the game promises to be a lively and entertaining contest to open the weekend.

Rangers look like the top team in the division, with Cillian and Ronan Caffrey from Kilmacud Crokes, Gavin Beadle and Eoin Delaney from Raheney, and home-grown talent Sean Twomey, John Williams, forming the backbone of the side. Ronan has been in excellent form after his season began with a role in New York’s contest against Mayo; he scored a point that day off the bench. With Denis Twomey pulling the strings they will be favorites for this cup.

St. Barnabas has another New York scorer from that Mayo day, Thomas McGovern, on their books. A flying forward when on song, he is a handful when in full flight.

Joe Hallinan at full back is a safe pair of hands, while Ciaran Moyle’s, Brian Dennehy, Thomas Brady, and young star Shane Flanagan will give Rangers a full day at the office.

The bank is at 55 tickets after Kerry turned the form book upside down last week. My friend Donie said there should not have been any games on for the 4th weekend, and that would have saved me a bundle.

Here goes this week -- 30 tix on Rangers to regain a cup they had a couple of years ago, with five points to spare.

Sunday, July 12

1 p.m.: IF Roscommon vs. Brooklyn/Long Island

Roscommon came back down to earth after the John Brady Cup win with a draw against Armagh last week.
