Confidence in Notre Dame Fighting Irish soars after Brian Kelly’s coach change ups
Kelly: ‘these are significant changes that will improve our football program’
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is hoping for big wins for the Fighting Irish side this year, after making several changes to his coaching staff during off-season.
Notre Dame football fans were not pleased when the team lost five of their 13 games this past season for the second consecutive season.
With three of his coaching staff leaving for other jobs, Kelly decided to bring in new blood in the hopes of getting the program kick started.
Speaking to the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, Kelly revealed why those decisions were made.
“After every season, when you don’t reach the goals that you set for yourself, it’s important the appropriate measures are taken in terms of evaluating all facets of your program; Player development, player personnel, coaching staff…all of those things,” he said.

“We did not reach the goals that we had set offensively. So it was important that we put the pieces together and we started with the coaching staff. I think that we’ve made significant improvements there,” Kelly added.
The first of the big moves was made when Kelly recruited coordinator Chuck Martin over to offensive coordinator.
“I'm excited about that move,” Kelly said. “Chuck and I have a shared vision when it comes to offense. Chuck is experienced and knows what I am looking for.”
Regarding defence, Iowa State assistant Bob Elliot has been tasked with working the secondary.
“Bob is a veteran coach that has coordinated at the highest level,” Kelly said.
Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco was also named as assistant head coach.
“We think that these are significant changes that will improve our football program,” Kelly said. “I believe that they already have immediately in terms of the relationships, communication, and the vision that we have on the offensive side of the ball.”
