An All Ireland soccer team is back on the discussion table  after Ireland suffered heavy losses to both Croatia and Spain in the opening matches of the UEFA championship in Poland.

The Irish Examiner reports that the matter has quickly become an issue. Prime Minister Enda Kenny and Northern Ireland’s first minister Peter Robinson and deputy minister Martin McGuinness have all spoken out about what they believe Ireland’s future soccer plans should be.

Speaking from what he calls a strictly personal view, Taoiseach Kenny said he supports an all-Ireland soccer program.  "I would be a big supporter of . . . [this]. They would certainly qualify for World Cups with a much stronger team. But then I’m not in control of that, I’m [just] giving my personal view."

"We can do so much more in the interests of the island of Ireland,” he added, “as we [already] do in rugby and boxing."

However, Northern Ireland’s first minister Peter Robinson is not so sure about the potential change: "I think, as a general principle, politicians should stay clear — apart from the supportive role that they should have — of sport. Everybody knows the direction that I would want to travel, but let’s not make political issues about sporting matters."

Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness, the deputy first minister, also supported the idea: "I agree with the Taoiseach, and this is not a political point. I do believe that on the world stage, football-wise, we’d be much more effective players if we were to choose from an island which has 6m people."

"My attitude is if a team is playing in green, I’ll support them."

In the wake of Ireland’s upsetting defeat at the hands of the world champions Spain at the UEFA match on Thursday, many wondered if manager Giovanni Trapattoni's position would be reviewed.  However, FAI officials still support Trap.

Said John Delaney, chief executive for FAI, "He has met the objectives that the association set out, which was to qualify for a major tournament.

"Yes we’ve had two very bad performances, one against the world champions. The one that disappoints us most was the Croatia game."

"I think he’ll want to do well against his home country on Monday night. It would be great to go home with three points at this stage and finish third in the group."

Trapattoni said that he believes he is the right man to lead Ireland through the World Cup qualifiers in 2014.

"I think that we [he and assistant Marco Tardelli] deserve to stay on,” said Trapattoni. "The reason is we have achieved qualification for the first time in 24 years. If you read the names of the squad when we came [and read the names in the squad now], you can see how many players we have brought into this team. I think it is our right [to stay on]. I have enthusiasm to stay, also for you and your colleagues."

It's obvious sport is being used as a constitutional metaphor here. The English upper-class rugby football is an All-Ireland phenomenon, albeit with a conspicuous absence of orange in the colours and absence of Abhránn na bh'Fíanní. Irish middle-class Gaelic foorball/hurling is also an All-Ireland phenomenon. Only working-class English soccer is partitioned, albeit played mainly with plastic Paddies. An All-Ireland everything would be better for everyone, not least a mature relationship between tow island nations.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny, NOT Prime Minister. Prime Minister is David Cameron of the United Kingdom.
WoundFeet/GeorgeDillon, typical misinformed as usual, sectarian and biased.
jacersagain--Ignorant people voting on things they know nothing about? You're referring to the EU referendum in Ireland, aren't you? As to your referendum restricted to soccer fans, what a ludicrous proposal. How do you find Irish soccer fans? Go out to Phoenix Park on a Sunday morning, or Tolka Park on a Sunday afternoon, or just trawl thru the bars on a Sunday night?
soccer attracts the more loonies and thugs of society, pilib04, the guys from ulster choose to play of the rep, they are adults, they weren't kidnapped or poached as some others may suggest and actually believe that Delaney dresses like the child catcher and steals footballers.
Why this article lays emphasis on what politicians north or south think of a united Irish soccer team is way off the mark. Let’s have an All-Ireland referendum between soccer fans or perhaps just of soccer club members only and let the result stand for all. A newspaper poll is no way to find out either – too many yahoos would vote on something they’ve no interest in and make a joke of the vote.
Pilib04, you really make some nonsensical points. The decision for a United Ireland team "should not be made by politicians". I never said it should, don't be such a fool. I said that young Nationalist players are making that decision, they're voting with their feet. And bigots like you can't stop them from opting to play with their fellow Irishmen.
That's garbage, citizen69. Under the Good Friday Agreement--which you probably voted for--people in the Six Counties can express their nationality and culture as they see fit. Lots of young Catholics don't see Kick The Pope songs and Red Hand flags at Windsor Park as their culture.
@Woundedknee: How very magnanimous of you... Yeah right. Your attitude stinks. Is this typical American sportsmanship? You'd like to take all the young Catholic players from the Northern Irish team and then complain that the Northern Irish team is sectarian because it doesn't have any Catholics in it!
WoundedKnee, you say you support a United Ireland team and then you state that you think the answer is to maintain a sectarian team. I find myself having to agree with Peter Robinson. The decision for or against a United Irish soccer team should not be made by politicians. I love Martin McGuinness, but on this one I part company. Stay with the politics, Martin, that's what you're good at and as for the Taoiseach, I haven't figured out what Kenny is good at! It was quite recent that folks in Northern Ireland broached the subject of a all-Ireland team (as the Republic was taking a lot of NI players). Don't even go down the road of anthems and flags. The Irish rugby solution is just fine (four province flag & Ireland's Call).
I support a United Ireland team. However, any Irish I know would strongly object to dumping their national anthem and being forced to accept the disgusting Ireland's Call in its place. I think the best policy is to keep trying to attract young players from the Nationalist tradition in the North to declare for the South. That will just leave a rump of players from the Loyalist background available to play for the North.
A single team wouldn't change things much on the pitch. Two separate teams will remain.
It Will Never Happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No judgments until after the Italia game. Then, some decisions and possible changes need to be made.
