IrishCentral.com was launched in March, 2009, and immediately established its reputation as a one-of-a-kind website for the global Irish community.
On its first day, it exclusively broke the report of the tragic death of Natasha Richardson, the wife of Irish actor Liam Neeson. It was also the first news outlet to report that legendary Irish writer Frank McCourt was suffering from terminal cancer, and the first to report on his death, which stunned the worldwide Irish community. IrishCentral broke the story of how the same crop blight that caused the infamous "Great Hunger" in Ireland had spread to small and then large farms in the United States. Recently, IrishCentral was the only news outlet in the world to report on the kidnapping of New York Times journalist Stephen Farrell by the Taliban - though after high-level talks with Times executives, removed the story in the interest of the reporter's safety.
Of course, there have been plenty of "scoops" that have put a smile, and not a frown, on our readers' faces, with coverage stretching from Irish dance festivals and music fairs across the country, to major legislation in Washington and high-level political news, to the latest football, soccer and hurling matches, to the newest movie from Colin Farrell or Liam Neeson, to just plain good craic and where to get the best pint no matter where you are in the world.
The media world has quickly taken notice. IrishCentral's scoops and its day-to-day coverage can now be regularly found on Google News, Yahoo! News, ABCNews.com, The New York Times, The Huffington Post and many other top-tier media outlets. Once a small fraction of its daily traffic, readers coming to us from other sites which post our stories now accounts for more than fifty percent of our visitors - an astounding feat in a young site. Equally remarkable is the loyalty shown by IrishCentral readers, more than 45,000 of who have signed up to receive our three-times-a-week email newsletter, and who read an average 3-4 stories on every visit to the site. These, too, are singularly impressive accomplishments for a young site, albeit one guided by experienced hands.
In short, IrishCentral is a startup that has definitely started up! And we're off and running.
IrishCentral's potential is as big as its audience. Today, more than 70 million people around the world - 40 million in the United States - identify themselves as having Irish descent. And our website is the only portal to "All Things Irish From Everywhere Irish."
