About Us -- The Look of the Irish
IrishCentral is the largest Irish American media site. It was launched in March 2009 in New York.
It serves over 1.4 million unique visitors a month, with 70,000 e-newsletter subscribers and has continued to grow with each passing month, easily surpassing all other Irish American websites.
The site is aimed at the 40 million Irish Americans across the United States, and also the Irish Diaspora of 70 million worldwide.
It was created to cater to one of America’s most affluent ethnic groups according to the U.S. Census. Irish Americans have a proud history, tradition and great ethnic pride. In business, literature, politics, entertainment and sports, the Irish have always been an intrinsic part of the American soul.
IrishCentral is part of a stable of four publications, all market leaders -- Irish America magazine, Irish Voice newspaper, both 25 years in publishing, and Home and Away newspaper.
In addition, we publish online and print lists of leading Irish Americans such as the Top 100 Irish Americans, Wall Street 50, Business 100, Legal 100, Silicon Valley 50, Education 100 Life Sciences 50 and the Irish America Hall of Fame. The publications are all based in New York City.
On its first day, IrishCentral exclusively broke the report of the tragic death of Natasha Richardson, the wife of Irish actor Liam Neeson. The site was also the first news outlet to report that legendary Irish writer Frank McCourt was suffering from terminal cancer, and the first to report on his death, which stunned the worldwide Irish community. IrishCentral was also was first to report on a global gathering of philanthropic billionaires in New York City which became a cover story about in Fortune magazine.
Our coverage stretches from Irish roots to Irish dance festivals and music fairs across the country; major events in Washington and high-level political news; the latest gossip, football, soccer and hurling matches, the newest movie from Colin Farrell or Liam Neeson, to just plain good craic and where to get the best pint no matter where you are in the world.
The media world has quickly taken notice. IrishCentral’s scoops and its day-to-day coverage can now be regularly found on Google News, Yahoo! News, ABCNews.com, The New York Times, the Huffington Post and many other top-tier media outlets.
Once a small fraction of its daily traffic, readers coming to IrishCentral from other sites which post our stories now accounts for more than 50 percent of our visitors -- an astounding feat for such a young site.
Equally remarkable is the loyalty shown by IrishCentral readers, more than 60,000 of whom have signed up to receive our five times a week email newsletter, and who read an average 3-4 stories on every visit to the site. These, too, are singularly impressive accomplishments for a young site, albeit one guided by experienced hands.
IrishCentral’s potential is as big as its audience. Today, more than 70 million people around the world -- 40 million in the United States -- identify themselves as having Irish descent. And our website is the only portal to "All Things Irish From Everywhere Irish."
IrishCentral is the vision of founder and president Niall O'Dowd, who has been an advocate of the global Irish community for more than a quarter-century. O’Dowd is the founder and publisher of the Irish Voice newspaper and Irish America magazine.
Located in New York City with additional editorial staff in Ireland, IrishCentral is at the center point of major news announcements affecting the Irish community. Our editorial staff operates 24/7 to bring the latest in Irish news, entertainment, sports, gossip, opinion and craic to our readers.
