Why are American men so dull? Irish men have far more sparkle and wit I say

\"\"

Irishmen are more 'carefree' and full of banter
Forgive me American men, but after a few weeks now of sampling the witty delights of Irish men, I have come to the realization that you are just plain boring in comparison!

Perched up in Kehoe’s pub on a Friday evening with my fellow Gaelic Girl Catelyn, we were taking it all in, from the men in suits, to the grungy looking artists, all enjoying well-deserved pints after a week of work.

To our pleasant surprise, a very dashing Irishman offered to buy us a drink and ‘welcome’ us to Ireland. I don’t know what you’re doing wrong down there in Cork, my dear Mollie, but we’ve had no problem up here in Dublin getting free drinks! After explaining to us that he has a weakness for American girls and their sparkly white teeth we didn’t want to disappoint him, so we whipped out some of our cheesy American phrases whenever we could, from ‘Oh, that’s neat!’ to ‘Awesome dude’ while desperately trying to force our cheeks back to our ears.

The minutes passed by into a couple of hours and before we knew it, we were surrounded by our cheeky chap and his ‘mates’, entertaining us with their wild, nearly unbelievable stories of their past year travelling around the world. What these boys didn’t get up to! In two words, they lived! Living out of rucksacks, buying dodgy, illegal cars to drive around Australia, only working half of the time, all while using their Irish charm to get them out of sticky situations with landlords, ladies and the law.

They’re risk-takers these Irish men, or as they would call themselves, ‘chancers’. A great expression thrown around here is ‘Sure, it’s only life! We’re here for a good time, not a long time!’ More importantly, they seem to live their lives by that very expression. When they chat you up, they are actually telling you their own stories of hilarious things they did and testing you to see if you have a sense of humor. Or rather was explained to me by the bar tender “Love, they’re just seeing how far they can get away with shocking you with their antics to see if you’ll put up with them”; which is a whole other article in itself dear readers that I am researching diligently.

Talking and ‘having a bit of banter’ comes naturally to those Irish men, they love storytelling and funny anecdotes. Even if it is a bit risqué, they’re not afraid to tell you some shocking tale of a debaucherous night ‘on the beer’ where they woke up in a doorway with half a kebab sitting on their lap only to find their cell phone was robbed. All while laughing at themselves about how crazy the night was leading up to that point.

Some women might not find that amusing, but for me, these boys tell you their stories with such charm and wit that I cannot help but imagine that my life with them would never be dull!

You see, that’s not typically something you get back home in the U.S. when meeting a man for the first time. Conversation usually starts with a ‘So, what do you work at?’ which feels business-like and formal, hell even like an interview for the rest of the time you’re with them.

American men are pre-occupied with the whole image of ‘what a man’s supposed to be’ which is constantly shoved down their necks by the media and Oprah wannabe’s. And they buy it hook, line and sinker! Which means they spend their twenties studying hard, playing by the rules, getting a good job with excellent career prospects so they can have their white picket fence house, 2.3 children and their mini-van in the driveway just to prove that they are good, decent American citizens!

Irish men just seem to have a more carefree, laid back attitude to this ‘life’ thing than our American men do, who are busy trying to achieve their goals, but missing out on the fun things that this world has to offer.

So, American men, take note, relax and stop worrying about your pension plan when you’re so young. These Irish men really know how to live in their twenties and could show you a thing or two about how to charm the pants off this Gaelic Girl!
