Christmas is the biggest annual celebration in the Irish calendar. Never a country to go halves on festivities, Ireland throws itself into the spirit of the season with due enthusiasm, with the country effectively shutting down over the period between Christmas Eve and January 2nd. Candles are lit in windows at nightfall as a symbolic welcome to Mary and Joseph, and – a fitting nod to their cousins across the pond – ‘Fairytale of New York’ is a popular music choice.

Of course, Christmas traditions have developed and evolved over hundreds of years, and are imbued with history. To get you in the mood for Christmas, Findmypast has lined up a host of festive treats, from history quizzes and prize draws to guest columns, historical recipes, and expert family history tips. Discover what sort of family historian you are, share your favourite Christmas rituals, and learn how your ancestors celebrated in years gone by.

Stay tuned for daily historical highlights on the Festive Countdown Page, or visit the Findmypast Facebook page every day between now and the 25th December to make sure you don’t miss out.

And that’s not all. When the turkey is finished and the plum pud is polished off, Findmypast will be launching their annual Start Your Family Tree Week from December 26-January 1. There’s no better time to catch up with relatives, discover what they know about your ancestors and grow your family tree.
