Many Irish heritage sites deemed too boring to be considered world class

Several of Ireland’s most heavily populated tourist attractions have been cut off the list to become Unesco world heritage sits because they did not have “outstanding universal value (OUV).”

More than 12 sites including Dublin’s Phoenix Park, home of President Mary McAleese and Killarney’s National Park, based on over 25,000 acres, were withdrawn from the list because they have no significant OUV.

Killarney National Park and Clara bog in Co Offaly were ruled out at a meeting of the Department of the Environment expert advisory group.

"There was a consensus within the group that these sites do not have OUV [outstanding universal value],” the meeting heard.

"There are much better examples of natural sites on the world heritage list and the integrity of Clara bog has been compromised by peat extraction."

Other sites were ruled out because they had been damaged by recent human activity.

Derry city and Kilkenny city- two historically walled towns- were also thrown out of the running citing “insufficient evidence to demonstrate a theme.”

An attempt to have the canals of Ireland included as one of Unesco’s site was also ruled out because they were not old enough.

The Grand Canal, built in 1763 is the southernmost of a pair of canals that connect Dublin, in the east of Ireland, with the River Shannon in the west, the two canals nearly encircling Dublin's inner city.

The group said: "The Chinese example takes precedence by way of comparison, having been constructed in the 2nd century and still in use today."

Although Birr Castle in Co. Offaly was also disregarded it may be considered next time round.

The reason; it may be too similar to Grennwich in London, already included on the world heritage list.

An account of the meeting said however: "The [site] at Greenwich includes the Observatory… in setting standards for the world and in the understanding and use of time, [it] was of outstanding universal value. That outstanding universal value did not exist at Birr Castle."

Only seven Irish sites remain in the running to be nominated a prestigious site.

They are as follows: Skellig Michael in Co Kerry, Brú na Bóinne in Co Meath, the Giant's Causeway in Co Antrim, the Burren, Ceide Fields and the Mayo Boglands, Clonmacnoise in Co Offaly, the Historic City of Dublin, a selection of early medieval monastic sites, the Western Stone Forts and a group of historic royal sites in Ireland including Tara.

@Georgedildo..The distance between the motorway and the exact site of the Hill is 2.2 km (1.37 miles)I don't know who you are but you are full of Sh*t.Every step you take in Ireland is on a prehistoric site of some kind, and every post you make is a derogatory remark towards the Irish, why don't you just fu*ck off
Well, killowen and GeorgeDillon, if you've lost all respect for the Irish, can you simply save some respect for Ireland, herself? Don't you feel connected to the land? Isn't there something intangible that no-one can take away from it. Awh, you're not really Irish, if you can't see it.
A partial makeshift accommodation to reflect the two traditions Ireland reminds me of the two country mantra of sitting side by side in the ME - such a crock that I want to puke. Its akin to the headless poodle of an ireland that I see, that tells so.
At least, the Irish still have ancient ruins all over the country. Other European countries haven't preserved much at all. I love all the ancient sites. The Irish deserve credit for building their towns around such monuments. It's a place like no other!
Remember what the Irish did to their mystic prehistoric site of Tara. They built a turnpike through it! The Irish are vandals, they don't deserve any sites they have yet to demolish.
Are the Irish crazy? The canals, eswpecially the one on Dublin's north side, are literally dumps. Full of shopping carts, bicyles, dead cats etc.
Who care what Unesco think? They are ours, and we love them.
I think this is crazy .In 2007 we went to Ireland ,our first stop was Killarney .This town was fabulous ,friendly people and a beautiful castle Ross Castle . Sometimes people like to go off the beaten path and not do such typical things . Dont let this Happen Tina
when something becomes a "unesco world heritage site", does the country lose control to the united nations? and no longer can do anything to or with it, but must provide maintenance expenses and upkeep?
" Boring " is not fair and was not used in the report quoted The claim that those omitted did not have “outstanding universal value" is fair enough and the survivors certainly do, though my own town Kinsale is considered by many to be much superior to Dublin !!!
The title of this post is sensationally bad.
