Irish woman ‘loved’ being pregnant for 25 years

A woman with 19 children has spoken about her love of motherhood

The Doherty clan at 16th-born Orla Doherty's wedding.

Mary Frances Doherty, now 68, from Moville in Co. Donegal married her husband Harry when she was 17. She fell pregnant soon after their wedding and remained pregnant almost every year after that, until she was 42.

"I was 17 and Harry was three months off 20 when we married. I had a baby every 13 or 15 months during our marriage and I never complained," Mary Frances told the Irish Examiner.

The brood which is made up of 11 daughters and eight sons includes: Bernadette, 51; Annemarie, 50; Hilary, 49; Patricia, 48; Shaun, 46; Paula, 45; Hugh, 44; Mary Majella, 43, Antoinette, 42; Seamus, 40; Laura, 39; Joe, 37; Ray, 35; Gemma, 34, Colm, 33, Orla, 31; Roma, 29; Paul, 28 and Leonie, 26.

The couple who ran the Moville Clothing Company provided enough offspring to run the family business. The company is one of Donegal’s oldest.

"Myself and Harry never broke our Confirmation pledges and have been teetotal all our lives. We never once took a drink or a smoke, and I’m sure that helped us have so many lovely babies," she added.

"I loved being pregnant and being a mammy and I thanked God for every wee child we got. Harry always helped me with the children and provided well for us all. We never even thought about stopping after four, five or six children. I dearly love all of them and no matter how many I had around my feet, I cried every time each one started school.”

Despite living in a cramped three bedroom council house in the beginning the couple never considered family planning. "I never used the pill or anything – I’m a natural, country woman," said Mary Frances. Harry added, "We just loved having babies. It came natural to us."

Twelfth-born son Joe reminisced about growing up in such a large family.

"Meal times were done in shifts because the table wasn’t big enough. The youngest ones were fed first, followed by the girls and then us boys. Our mother would never eat until we were all fed.  We had to get an extension built and then my father put a mobile home outside the house for the older boys to sleep in at night,"laughed Joe.

The couple’s final family tally includes their 19 children; 37 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The retired couple attend mass daily and their home is always bustling with adoring grandchildren who live closely.

kevinosullivan Do you think there should be a competition in ireland as to who can produce big families? My money is on the Muslims and Africans.
Yep..."woundedknee"...we know about the massacre in 1890 and the later siege/standoff in 1973. I remember it well. But in all seriousness....the white race is fast becoming a minority. So what is your answer to that ??
Woundedknee your head is wounded too....In short you are a Nut.
My dad's oldest brother & his wife had 18 children...I don't know if my aunt "loved" being pregnant, but she was a devout Catholic and I'm sure she thought it was her duty. However, they were married at a time before most types of birth control were around anyway. My uncle was born in the early 1900's, my dad in 1915 (he was 20 yrs older than my mom)so my uncle's oldest is older than my mom, and his youngest is close to my age.
Bushhill: I've reported your stupid abuse, though knowing this site, I don't expect you'll receive the sanction you deserve i.e a virtual ass-kicking.
Bushhill: What's a skenk? Is it the same as a fool? So you're a skenk? You certainly sound like a fool, an abusive idiot.
Dublinjas: You show your ignorance. If you knew anything of US history you'd know where my moniker comes from. I guess they didn't teach you that in grade school. Did you never make it to high school?
gezzie: "Wounded......... I'd say you are an upstanding citizen!!!" I sure am. And by the look of things, your father is too!
You are a year younger that my youngest daughter and if she was as determined as you are to come to New York I'll give you the same words of advice that I would give her. "Beware, be smart and be very very careful. The vultures are circling and beware the one with road kill on his head."
Manys a child has felt unwanted, an inconvenience, a 'mistake' en route. Some informed so "I wish I had never had you". Harry and Mary Frances are an accolade to parenthood in my opinion: All 19 cherished from day one. The warmth of the Doherty clan in the photo is marvellous. We were eight: Five boys.Three girls. Wish we had been neighbours. Can only imagine 'the craic' some twenty years on. God Bless you.
Oh and by the by You can't have too many Donegal People, They are the salt of the Earth.
What a Truly Marvelous Family story, I would have always wanted to belong to a large family like this instead of the three that was my own. WoundedKnee These are hard working Productive people who pay PRSI and payroll Taxes and I am sure they will pay back many times more than was ever received in benefits......What about You ? I think your wound is quite a bit higher up than your knee.
Thanks to Harry and Mary Doherty, for showing us there's is still some beauty in this world, unfortunately it also exposes us to the ugliness of skenks like Wounded Knee.
What a legacy. For a culture to survive requires 3.2 children per family. Obviously the culture is alive and well in Donegal, thanks to Mary and Harry for taking up the void caused by the slackers.
Keep in mind, folks, that by 2050 we caucasians are forcasted to be a minority...at least in the US...thank you Mary and Harry for doing your part.
