Fassbender got his first big role in Steven Spielberg’s 2001 TV mini-series, “Band of Brothers”. After a number of TV roles over the next couple of years, Fassbender finally broke into mainstream cinema in 2006, playing Stelios in the film “300”, directed by Zack Snyder.
In 2008, Fassbender played the lead role of hunger-striker Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen’s film, “Hunger”. 2009 brought two critically acclaimed roles for Fassbender, with his role as Lieutenant Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”, as well as playing Connor in Andrea Arnold’s film, “Fish Tank”.
Fassbender turned to the horror genre in 2010, with his role in Joel Schumacher’s “Blood Creek”, alongside Dominic Purcell. 2010 also saw the release of Neil Marshall’s “Centurion”, with Fassbender in the lead role, and “Jonah Hex”, where he played Burke, right-hand man to Josh Brolin’s title character.
2011 brought more lead roles for Fassbender, as he played Edward Rochester opposite Mia Wasikowska's Jane Eyre, in the film of the same name. Later in 2011, in a return to action films, Fassbender was cast as Magneto, in “X-Men: First Class”, the prequel to the X-Men series, with James McAvoy depicting the character of Charles Xavier. This role has helped to cement Fassbender’s status as more of a mainstream movie star.
More recent projects for Fassbender include the release of “A Dangerous Method”, directed by David Cronenberg, where he plays psychologist Carl Jung. Fassbender also reunited with director Steve McQueen this year, as he starred in McQueen’s film, “Shame”, which is based in New York and about a man dealing with sex-addiction. Fassbender has already received rave reviews for his lead role in this movie.
It has been announced that Fassbender will star in Brendan Gleeson’s directorial debut, “At Swim-Two-Birds” in 2012.
