This Irish model and actor has been the face of Versace and of several Hugo Boss fragrances and has starred in films such as "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Match Point," and on the show "the Tudors."
He was born Jonathan Michael Francis O'Keeffe, to Mary Geraldine Myers and John O'Keeffe, a musician. Born with a serious heart poblem, he recovered quickly and moved to Cork wih his family. Although most of his family were musicians, it wasn't until Meyers was17 years old wen he got his acting debut.
Meyers was first discovered in a pool hall after he was expelled from school for excessive absences. His first film debut came in "A Man of No Importance" in 1994, and after he appeared in "Michael Collins" in 1996 and "Ride with the Devil" in 1999. Since them he's been in "Velvet Goldmine," "Bend It Like Beckham," "Vanity Fair," Alexander," "Match Point," "MIssion: Imopssible III," "August Rush," "The Children of Huang Shi," and "Shelter."
In television series, Jonathan has starred in "Gormenghast" and in the mini-series "Elvis," (he played Elvis himself) for which he was awarded a Golden Globe award. He's also starred in "The Tudors" as Henry VIII and was nominated for, though did not receive, a Golden Globe award.
Meyers has struggled for many years with an alcohol addiction. He has been to rehab a total of five times, and on Tues, June 28th, 2011, he unsuccessfully attempted suicide. Aside from his addiction, however, he became a celebrity ambassador for "The Hope Foundation," a charity to help street children which is based out of Cork.
Rhys Meyers also recerived "Honourary Patronage" from the Trinity College Philosophical Society in Dublin, Ireland.
