History Notes on the Name

Ryan families rank as one of the ten most numerous

in Ireland. The older forms of O'Ryan and O'Mulryan

have largely been discarded.

It appears most Ryans today descend anciently from

the O'Maoilrian family of Tipperary. This family held

Owney, Co. Tipperary and Owneyburg, Co. Limerick.

They are found on the Map of Ortelius in that area.

These lands were once known as "Owney Mulryan",

referring to the older spelling of the name there....

Keatings History also gives the O'Ryans as an ancient

family of note in other counties..... Ryan is found most

numerous of all names in Limerick and Tipperary in

modern times...

Curious News and Notes, From Ireland today

1) Amhran na bhFiann, the Irish National Anthem is popular,

despite calls for a less ‘militaristic’ song. Well, what about

‘the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air’ for the U.S....

but survey shows only 7% of people actually want it changed.
