“What we have now is a document of a real Irish success story in London,” says Deignan.
“They weren’t just dealing with the legacy of oppressive ideas about femininity and womanhood in Ireland at the time. They confronted how difficult it was to be Irish in London.“
They also confronted their own community’s expectations about how women should behave.
The center became the place where they thrashed all that out. It worked.”
