Vice President Joe Biden made the right call, just to the wrong guy.
Marty Walsh, the longtime Massachusetts Democratic political consultant, got the surprise of his life on Tuesday night when his phone rang.
Walsh, who reportedly owns Gateway Public Solutions, noticed his phone started ringing once Martin Walsh, the Massachusetts state lawmaker, won the Boston mayoral race.
The first unexpected call came from a White House operator who told him that President Obama wanted to speak to him.
But Walsh clarified they wanted Martin, not Marty, adding that she had the wrong guy.
Minutes later the phone rang again. This time the voice was unmistakable.
'Marty, congratulations you son of a gun,' the voice laughed.
'It was Vice President Biden and he went right into it,' Walsh told USA Today. 'He said, 'You did it!' I said, Mr. Vice President, thank you very much, but you have the wrong Marty Walsh.'
Walsh said that vice president Biden didn't miss a beat.
'He laughed and said, 'Well, at least I got a Marty Walsh in Boston.'
Before the vice president hung up, Walsh said Biden congratulated him and joked 'But you are not the mayor now.'
Later that night Walsh received further calls from Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
It's not the first time the two Walshes have been confused, he told the press. In 2006, the consultant served as Senator Edward Kennedy's campaign manager and got a shout-out in his boss's victory speech.
'I remember Marty now-the-mayor telling me, 'My mother was so proud of me,' not-the-mayor Marty Walsh said. 'He said, 'I didn't have the heart to tell her it was the other Marty Walsh.'
