Dublin broke a 71-year long record with six consecutive days with over 14.5 hours of sunshine in June this year, with a monthly total of 210.8 hours according to reports from Dublin airport. The monthly record for sunshine duration remains unbroken at 301 total hours since the station opened in 1942.
The month was one of the sunniest and driest across all of Ireland, according to Met Eireann, with average sunshine durations longer across several counties. The longest daily sunshine total recorded was 15.8 hours in Cork on both June 4th and 7th, and in Belmullet on June 8th, making it the sunniest day in Belmullet in 18 years.
Co. Mayo recorded the highest average monthly temperature at 57.5 degrees in Newport, which also experienced the highest daily temperature of 77 degrees on the 8th. Mayo also recorded the lowest average temperature for the month at Ireland West Airport Knock with 54.8 degrees.
Despite the overall sunniness, though, the temperatures recorded were, on average, cooler than previous years. The coldest conditions as compared to the long-term average occurred at Sherkin Island, Co. Cork with an average of 55.5 degrees, around 1.4 degrees short of its June normal.
June also proved to be a dry month all around, with 8 of 11 synoptic stations reporting a lower average percentage of rainfall as compared to their period standards. However, Valentia Observatory in Co. Kerry recorded 5.2 inches of rainfall, 145 percent of its long-term average. Additionally, Roche's Point in Co. Cork recorded 146 percent of its long-term rainfall average.
By the end of the month, the weather was returning to normal, with bands of rain and drizzle accompanied by cooler temperatures and some places recording gale gusts.
