A painting by Irish artist Sir John Lavery was sold for $1.3 million at Sotheby’s in New York. It was the second largest price ever paid for a Sir John Lavery painting, reports the Irish Times.

The painting by Lavery is called The Green Sofa and was owned by Katherine Mellon, an American art collector who died last year. She bought it in 1985. The painting was sold to an anonymous buyer.

The Green Sofa painting is an oil-on-canvas measuring 25 by 36 inches.
Sotheby’s said the price had comfortably exceeded the highest estimate of $1 million.

Spokeswoman Polly Sartori said it had been bought by a private American investor.
