One in four Irish tuned in to watch Obama’s visit to Ireland

Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE, have released their figures for May 23, the day President Obama visited Ireland and connected with his Moneygall, County Offaly roots. Their figures show that over one million viewers tuned in to watch the Presidents rousing speech at the public rally in College Green, Dublin.
 
RTE One, the channel which hosted all-day coverage of the historic event reached a peak of 1.1 million viewers on Monday evening at 6.38 when the President was speaking.
 
At 9.30 am when the President and First Lady, Michelle Obama, landed at Dublin Airport on Air Force One RTE One’s numbers averaged at 300,000.
 
During the afternoon while the President visited his ancestral home of MoneygallCounty Offaly the figure averaged at 600,000 viewers. The Nine O'clock News also had an average viewership of 778,000.
 
Ireland’s enthusiasm for the American President could be clearly felt on the streets of Moneygall, a town with a population of 300. On the afternoon of his visit 3,000 people, who were lucky enough to get tickets, lined the streets.
 
The evening concert in Dublin, at College Green, was attended by over 25,000 people, according to the to Michael Slattery, managing director of Fire Safety Engineers and overall event safety coordinator.
