Massive winter storm will hit Ireland

Flooding and hurricane-like winds expected

A massive winter storm is set to hit Ireland with hurricane-like winds and flooding on Sunday night and Monday authorities say.

Coastal areas are expected to be hardest hit and major flooding alerts have been issued for counties Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Clare and Galway.

The surprise winter storm will pack a real punch say Irish weather forecaster,s who have issued an early alert of severe flooding and dangerous driving conditions.

The Irish Army are set to be called in and aircraft have been put on stand by to deal with the worst of the storm. Up to 400 troops are on standby if needed.

Limerick City Council Crisis Management Team has begun placing sand bags at vulnerable points along the river in the city center.

Authorities have warned people to stay home and not to drive unless absolutely neccessary because of fear of fallen trees and road blockages.

I didn't know it WAS winter already...
The storm that never happened.ha ha
What happened to that Global Warming? Shouldn't winter storms be a thing of the past by now?
Sirpeter is right, not much of a storm here in Cork.I wasted my free cheese stopping up the gap at the bottom of my door.
Here in Cork..A bit of rain, wind not worth talking about...1.34am Irish time.
We were in Ireland this past August. Included Strandhill in County Sligo. The beach is 'off limits' for swimming. Only surfers allowed. The waters choppy and undercurrents strong even on a calm day. Friends of ours there have a Guest House. Most always filled with surfers coming and going in their 'black seal' outfits and boards. And e-mailed that several ignored caution on the radio and from themselves. And are in the roaring ocean. When you're young such stuff only holds more of a dare-devil I suppose. My thoughts and prayers are with those on standby along the West Coast. Crews who rescue even the foolhardy.
OK, high winds and some intermittent heavy rain. As you can guess, ate curry and abandoned beer fest. 00.30 Irish time
strong winds in Dublin right now, just heard about the hurricane now, expecting weather to get better tomorrow morning.
I won’t be wearing wellies tonight; I’ll be calmly asleep in bed while this blows over during the night. The calm before the storm has passed - rain is coming down really heavy now on our east coast and wind is definitely getting stronger. From my house, I can hear the sea waves roaring. Spare a thought and a prayer for the people on boats off the west coast tonight and for the helicopter and lifeboat crews on standby. I saw on the 6pm live TV news that the wind and rain was ferocious in Donegal 3 hrs ago. That’s what’s supposed to be heading for the east coast during this night. I might need my wellies in the morning.
strong strong winds in Balbriggan now ..... quite all day, winds only started an hour ago...
Hey Folks! Hate to turn down the excitement threshold but, here in Dublin city, I and my wife are awaiting same. Curry in microwave and beer in fridge. So far? Not a peep. 19.34 Irish time
