Irish language schools in big demand in Dublin

Gaelscoils are in big demand.

Demand for all-Irish primary schools in South Dublin has doubled since 2001. The figures emerge at a time when campaigners in Dublin are attempting to establish an all Irish second level education school in Dublin.

In Ireland, Gaelscoils typically exist outside of Irish speaking areas. Here, students are fully immersed in the language as they study the standard curriculum through the medium of the Irish language.

However, the demand for primary places is not being matched by the creation of additional places in Irish language second level schools.

"There is massive unmet demand for Irish language second-level education in South Dublin," said Lugh O Braonain, spokesperson for the campaign to set up a new school, Bunchoiste Gaelcholaiste Dheisceart Atha Cliath.

I agree with sallyorob. What is wrong with learning a second language? Especially since it Ireland's native tongue. The British unsucessfully tried to wipe out the Gaelic language as well as the people themselves. We should be proud of our heritage and should want to further ourselves in our beautiful culture.
As an Irish-AMerican who has returned to Ireland several times over thre years to take thre Irish language, I, too, hope the second level schools will step up their response to the desire for Irish language courses. The folks I met in Ireland could not understand why I would do such a thing as to study Irish, but I learned a long time ago that the way to know a people was to study their language. If the Irish really want to remain true to themselves as a people, they will encourage the study of their own language. You may believe me when I tell you that a world-wide group called the English Speaking Union is doing its very best to wipe out all indiginous languages everywhere. They even have chapters in South America, Asia, and Africa. Just how Enlish do the Irish want to be?
One has to wonder--why?
I hope the government will see to it that more Irish language second level schools are created, so the Irish language will continue to thrive not just survive.
