Ciarán Ó Conghaile, originally of Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands, was murdered on October 10 in quiet part of his Dorchester neighborhood.

Despite his death, Ciarán’s family and friends have bonded together to create a memorial for the man affectionately known as “Kiwi.”

To celebrate his time spent at the American Legion Post on Gallivan Boulevard – or The Bunker – they decided to commemorate Ciarán’s life with a bench to be sent to his family’s home in Ireland.

“The idea first came from Billy Wright, who wanted to send something back to Kiwi’s family. When Billy passed away this Easter Sunday we kept the idea going,” said Ciarán Murray, one of the organizers.

“We wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to rot so we found a good solid composite bench. We collected all sorts of military coins from all the military branches and put them there. Then we got a few Boston police officers and firefighters to give us their badges and we put them in the bench too.”

The bench’s contents were then covered with a layer of glass to secure everything in place.

Through talks with the Ó Conghaile family, they have agreed to place the bench at Ciarán’s gravesite in Inis Meáin. It will serve not only as a memorial to Ciarán’s life, but also to that of his brother, Micheál, who drowned in 2000.
