Long Island Gaels 5-26 Tipperary 3-6
It was all Long Island for the hour in this senior hurling contest, with Keith Hogan, Damien Murray and Mike Elwood all brilliant in the forward line as they dominated and fired over score after score.
At the break they were ahead 4-14 to 2-2 with the supply coming into the forward line setting them up for score after score. Indeed the play of Ciaran Murtagh and Matt Keating at the back was pivotal in setting up the forwards.
The goals came from Elwood, Damien Murray (two) and Keith Hogan, with the center forward also popping over frees at will when the opportunities arose. The few highlights for Tipp were a number of good saves by Eddie Hogan and a brace of goals by Shane Sweeney.
It was more of the same in the second half as the points flowed with subs coming off the bench and adding on to the total.
Tipp had their best period in the opening moments when they points from Ryan, Coome and a long range effort from Paul Loughnane. It was just a respite, however, as Long Island reacted with a string of scores.
McMahon, McAteer, Keating and Jake McMahon all hit the mark with Damien Murray grabbing a goal to pad on. Ger Morris did fire a great goal from a glorious Loughnane pass but that was the best they could muster.
First game of the season will not worry Tipperary. They lost the first three last season and then had seven county players at their disposal while moving on to a title.
Colm Forde, Cian Maher and Paul Loughnane were their best, with Eddie Hogan stopping four more certain goals.
Long Island will be delighted with the early season form of Murtagh, Keating, Hogan, Elwood and Damien Murray. All had huge contributions.
