Leitrim maintained their stranglehold on the FBD League as they defeated Roscommon in Sunday’s final by 2-5 to 1-7 at Sean McDiarmada Park.
Captain Emlyn Mulligan lifted the trophy for the second year in a row but was quick to put it all into context before Leitrim open their NFL Division Four campaign against Antrim on Sunday.
“We approached every game with the right mentality and the boys worked hard all winter, but it’s another competitive game on our route to get promoted out of Division Four,” Mulligan said.
“But I would swap this win for two points against Antrim next weekend. That’s where our priorities lie. It’s great to win the FBD again, but the league is where the focus is.”
New Leitrim manager Sean Hagan was also keen to put reality back on the table as he enjoyed the early-season silverware.
Hagan said, “It was a real squad effort, we are absolutely delighted. The FBD League was to get competitive games in before the Allianz League and when you go so far in any competition, you want to win them.
“The lads played extremely well, particularly in the first half and they played good economical football. It’s all about the squad, every man has played a terrific role in this FBD run.
“As Emlyn Mulligan said himself coming up to this, there’s only three trophies we can win this year, and this is one of them. Every inter-county footballer plays to win something.”
