Jamie Dornan has millions of fans around the world, most of them female, but none as important as one of his older ones – Dr. Jim Dornan, Jamie’s father, who lives in Belfast and is a well-respected OB-GYN who has delivered thousands of babies throughout the North.

The good doc spoke lovingly about his son last week on Irish radio. He’s been giving some interviews to promote a new soccer concept he’s come up with called Circular Football.

Dornan senior is proud of his son’s U.S. breakout role in Fifty Shades of Grey earlier this year. “I thought the director [Sam Taylor Wood] did very well. You can only work with the materials you’re given, which is a great line,” he said.

Dr. Dornan, 67, is quite a fascinating character in his own right. Ten years ago he was diagnosed with leukemia, and his wife died from cancer when Jamie was a teen. The good doc is in remission now, feeling great and remarried to fellow Belfast-based OB-GYN Dr. Samina Dornan.

“I know it’s a weird thing to say about your son but he’s one of the nicest people I know. He a good guy,” said Dornan.

“The best part of the whole thing is the world now knows how to spell Dornan. I spent 40 years spelling it correctly to people,” he added.

Jamie, at 32 the youngest of the three Dornan kids, wasn’t inclined to follow his dad into the medical field. His father was fully supportive of his only son’s choices.

“It was a surprise when he did go down that line but we gave full encouragement to him because there has been a few people in our family that probably should have gone down that line, like my sister for example,” Dornan said.

To help launch his Circular Football concept, Jim recruited his son and another pal, fellow Northern Irishman top-ranked pro golfer Rory McIlroy. Rory and Jamie took part in a video to demonstrate how the game is played – with Rory winning by two goals to one.
