UPDATE: IrishCentral has identified the man in question as Gary Halpin (33), a native of Cobh, County Cork, who worked as a graphic designer.
An Irish immigrant was viciously attacked and left for dead in the quiet neighborhood of Adams Village, in Boston, in the early hours of Sunday morning (August 18).
He is currently listed as in serious condition at Boston Medical Center after sustaining life threatening injuries.
According to police spokeswoman Katherine Shea, the Irishman, in his 30s, was discovered unconscious near the corner of Gallivan Blvd and Adams St, in the Dorchester section of Boston, by police, who received a phone call around 4.14am, on Sunday morning.
Boston police are withholding the identity of the victim, who was savagely beaten just a few blocks from his home.
Conflicting reports exist about the events that led up to the alleged incident at Adam’s Corner. Although the police were tight-lipped on the circumstances of the attack, they are asking anyone who may have been in the area or who many have any information to come forward.
IrishCentral's sister publication in Boston, The Irish Emigrant, received an appeal from a friend of the victim, asking anyone with any information to contact the authorities. She described the man as from Cobh, County Cork and living in Boston, with his wife and three-year-old daughter.
Residents and businesses alike in the predominantly Irish neighborhood were still reeling on Monday, that an assault with such brutality had taken place on their doorstep. Adams Village is considered to be one the safest parts of Dorchester with a very close-knit community and this attack which has left a man fighting for his life only served to remind the locals of the tragic case of Ciaran O Conghaile , an Irish man who was murdered as he walked home in the same area in October, 2011.
Boston police investigating the events of this assault are appealing to anyone with information to please come forward so they can build an accurate timeline leading up to the discovery of this man’s unconscious body. The authorities can be contacted at 1-800-494-TIPS or by texting 27463; individuals contacting the police also have an option of remaining anonymous.
Anyone hesitant to contact police directly, because of their immigration status, can contact the Irish Pastoral Centre at 617 265-5300 or the Irish International Immigrant Centre at 617-542-7654. Any information you have may be critical in solving this crime.
