Released from prison on a $1 million bond, George Zimmerman is now being protected by a full-time security team at a Florida safe house.
Zimmerman was released from prison on Saturday for the second time after Judge Kenneth R Lester’s decision to release him on a restricted bond. His defense team, headed up by Irish American attorney Mark O’Mara, helped him to post 10 percent of the $1 million bond.
O’Mara called on Zimmerman’s public supporters’ to give monetary donations for an aggressive defense. The trial will begin on 8th August.
On Thursday, Lester said he believed Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie’s, deceit in court over the amount of money they had at their disposal in April, could have indicated that they were planning to flee. Despite having revoked his first $150,000 bond, Lester announced that Zimmerman could once more be released from prison.
He said, “This court has, thus far, declined to exercise its contempt powers and the state failed to prove that the defendant may be held without bond.”
Lester believes that the court revoking Zimmerman’s first bond “thwarted” his attempts to flee the area.
In his ruling he stated that Zimmerman would now be under electronic monitoring as he believes “the defendant and his wife would have fled the United States with at least $130,000 of other people's money."
In a post on Zimmerman’s defense team’s website, they stated that before the bond was paid his fund had $211,000 and payables of $40,000. O’Mara predicted that immediate upcoming expenses would clear this fund out.
He added, "For those who have given in the past, for those who have thought about giving ... now is the time to show your support."
