Former US President Jimmy Carter was in Kilkenny this past week as part of a summit for The Elders organization, an elite independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights.

The Kilkenny People reports that during his visit to Ireland this week, Carter took time to enjoy some fishing on the River Nore. Naturally, the former US President was flanked by members of his secret service team nearby.

President Carter is reportedly staying at Mount Juliet in Thomastown, Kilkenny.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson is also part of the elite The Elders organization. The group, which consists of former global leaders, works on issues varying from child marriage to climate change. Archbishop Desmond Tutu currently serves as the chair of the organization, which was initially conceived by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

Prior to President Carter’s Irish visit this week, members of the US embassy and secret service agents went to St Luke’ Hospital in the city to ensure it could cater for a potential stroke or heart attack. Nearby Waterford Airport was also put on standby for emergency cover, reports The Kilkenny People.

President Carter is expected to fly back to the US on Thursday May 9.
