Heartbreaking news for all the guys who had a thing for that girl in “Top Gun” – she’s gay.
Irish American actress Kelly McGillis, best known for playing Tom Cruise’s flight instructor and lover in “Top Gun,” has confirmed longstanding rumors that she’s a lesbian in an interview with Web site SheWired.com.
McGillis, 51, who is twice married, twiced divorced and has two teenage daughters, said, “I'm done with the man thing. I did that, I need to move on in life. That’s another part of being true to yourself...that’s been a challenge for me personally."
“The Accused” actress explained how she’s struggled with her sexuality since the age of 12.
“I had a lot of things happened that convinced me that God was punishing me for being gay,” she said. “That was a hard process.”
She added that “life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.”
McGillis, who played a closeted lesbian on the popular TV series “The L Word,” told the Web site that now she is single, she is “definitely looking for a woman.”
A surprise for some, but in the gay community, McGillis' sexual orientation was known as one of Hollywood's “worst-kept secrets.”
In 1995, McGillis embraced her Irish roots by joining Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, Aidan Quinn and Brenda Fricker in narrating the popular documentary "Out of Ireland," which traced the history of Irish immigration to the U.S.
