JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS / Degree of Irishness: Dublin-born / Vice(s): Alcohol / Rhys Meyers first checked into rehab for alcohol abuse in May 2005 at the infamous Promises in California. In April 2007, it was reported he checked into rehab again, and then, in November of that year, the actor was arrested in Dublin Airport and charged with public drunkenness and breach of the peace. It’s been reported that in February 2009, Rhys Meyers checked into a rehab facility in England, though now the actor is denying it.
MAUREEN MCCORMICK / Degree of Irishness: Irish American / Vice(s): Cocaine, sedatives / Marcia Brady had drug problems?! You betcha. In her post “Brady Bunch” days, Maureen McCormick suffered from addictions to cocaine and Quaaludes, a type of sedative. Her addictions were so bad that they essentially destroyed her career, and drove her to trading sex for cocaine. McCormick has also entered rehab for her struggles with bulimia. The actress has gone through a series of interventions, stints in rehab, and experimental therapies, and is now clean.
COLIN FARRELL / Degree of Irishness: Dublin-born / Vice(s): Painkillers / In December 2005, Farrell voluntarily checked into a rehab center for exhaustion and addiction to pain killers. His publicist said the actor started taking prescription meds due to a back injury. He was released in January 2006, and began attending rehab meetings in May of that year.
LINDSAY LOHAN / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (Irish roots on both sides) / Vice(s): Alcohol, cocaine / Wild child Lindsay Lohan began attending AA meetings in 2006 at the ripe age of 20. In January 2007, Lohan checked herself into rehab for her drinking problem, and landed herself back in rehab in May 2007 after crashing her car while drunk. Later, she was arrested for another DUI and cocaine possession, she made another trip to rehab in August 2007.
BEN AFFLECK / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (mother of Irish descent) / Vice(s): Alcohol / Ben Affleck is just one of the many celebrities who have entered California’s Promises treatment facility. Charlie Sheen, a fellow former rehabber, drove him there in 2001, and Affleck voluntariliy checked himself in to treat his alcoholism.
TATUM O'NEAL / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (father of Irish descent) / Vice(s): Heroin; crack-cocaine / In the 1990s, O’Neal developed an addiction to heroin, resulting in her losing custody of her kids to ex-husband and tennis star John McEnroe. The Oscar-winning child star’s drug problems reemerged when she was arrested for buying crack-cocaine outside her Manhattan apartment. She was charged with a misdemeanor, criminal possession of a controlled substance and sent to a drug treatment program.
PETE DOHERTY / Degree of Irishness: Irish-English (father of Irish descent) / Vice(s): Alcohol, crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana, ketamine / Pete Doherty is one of Britain’s most infamous celebrity drug offenders. The Babyshambles rocker has been arrested for driving drunk and for possession of crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana and ketamine. He’s already landed himself in jail and rehab facilities several times.
MEL GIBSON / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (mother is Irish-born) / Vice(s): Alcohol / Mel Gibson has long struggled with alcohol abuse. H was first arrested for drunk driving in 1984. He most recently relapsed in August 2006, when he was arrested again for drunk driving (and made some controversial anti-Semitic remarks during the drunken arrest). He then headed into a self-help program to beat his demons.
TARA CONNER / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (father of Irish descent) / Vice(s): Alcohol, cocaine / The press went wild when the former Miss USA's party girl ways were made public. Though she abused alcohol and reportedly used cocaine, she didn’t lose her crown, but instead entered an alcohol rehab facility in late 2006. She later admitted to Matt Lauer that she had abused cocaine and anti-depressants, and had faced her “demons” which she said stemmed from child abuse.
ROBERT DOWNEY JR. / Degree of Irishness: Irish American (father of Irish descent) / Vice(s): Heroin, cocaine, Valium / Robert Downey Jr., a famous Irish American rehabber, claims he’s been addicted to drugs since the age of 8. The actor is quite familiar with the whole drug abuse – arrest – rehab – relapse routine. From 1996 through 2001, he was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges and visited several drug treatment programs. Downey has since made a comeback – career-wise, and personally, and is now clean.
