Irish work gets nominated for 2013 BAFTAs

The nominations for the 2013 BAFTAs were released on Wednesday, and Steven Spielberg’s historical documentary ‘Lincoln’ is leading the pack with ten nominations. Several other films that boast Irish production work are also nominated amongst the categories.

The Irish star of ‘Lincoln,’ Daniel Day-Lewis, is nominated for Best Actor this year. Day-Lewis is no stranger to the BAFTAs; the actor has been nominated five times for a Best Actor award, and has won three times.

‘Lincoln’ leads the pack with its ten nominations in the following categories: Best Film, Makeup & Hair, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Production Design.

Despite being the most-nominated film for this year’s BAFTAS, ‘Lincoln’s director Steven Spielberg received a major snub when he wasn’t included in the nominees for Best Director.

Irish-English director Martin McDonagh is nominated for Outstanding British Film for his work on ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ which stars Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken.

McDonagh was also nominated in 2009 for his work on ‘In Bruges,’ which also starred Dublin native Colin Farrell. McDonagh won the Best Original Screenplay that year for ‘In Bruges’ and was nominated for Outstanding British Film.

Seamus McGarvey, who was born in Armagh, is nominated in the Cinematography category for his work on ‘Anna Karenina,’ which stars Keira Knightley and Jude Law. McGarvey was previously nominated in 2008 for his cinematography work on ‘Atonement,’ which also starred Keira Knightley.

Irish animation filmmaker Eamonn O’Neill is nominated for his short animation, ‘I’m Fine Thanks.’

Irish filmmakers Kris Kelly and Evelyn McGrath have been nominated in the Short Animation category for their film ‘Here to Fall,’ which won the Don Quijote Prize at the 2012 Galway Film Fleadh.
