The Boston Police Homicide Unit are still appealing for witnesses to the brutal assault that took place in the early hours last Sunday morning, August 18th, on Irishman Gary Halpin (33) in the Dorchester section of Boston.

Originally from Carrigaloe in Cobh, Co Cork, Haplin has called Boston his home for the last 6 years and works as a freelance designer in the city. The native of Cork, who is a father of one, is understood to be making a slow and steady progress after the savage assault which left him hospitalized for 5 days.

His mother, father and brother have flown from Ireland to be by his side and help give support to his wife and child during this stressful time. Whilst immediate families have not spoken in depth with reporters, a spokesperson for the family has confirmed that ‘‘He’s out of ICU and is doing well." Gary is reported to remember everything about that night up until the assault however given the severity of his head trauma it may take some time for his full memory to return.

Late word is that Gary Halpin was released from the hospital on Friday and is recovering at home. According to a family friend, "Although he has made great progress in his recovery, Gary is still in a lot of pain and will require rehab care as an outpatient." The friend went on to say that police have made no further progress in their investigation of who was responsible for the attack.

Despite various motives being suggested, robbery seems to be the most likely as it was revealed during the week that his ATM card was stolen during the assault and that money has since been taken from the account. Whilst the exact events leading up to the attack are still speculative, some details have been confirmed. According to the Boston Police Incident Report obtained by The Irish Emigrant, a group of people had flagged down the Trooper as he traveled by Gallivan Blvd. in his marked cruiser. The group proceeded to relay information about a man that had been seen staggering in the area and whom they believed had been beaten up. The Trooper continued further down the road when his attention was drawn to the local Rite Aid car park, near the corner of Gallivan Blvd. and Adams St. The Trooper observed the father of one who attempted to walk towards the Troopers vehicle. Due to the extent of his injuries, the Irishman could only walk a few hours before collapsing on the ground. An EMS unit was called and they quickly transported the Cork native to the Boston Medical Center for further evaluation. Boston police officers were informed on arrival by the medics that the graphic designer was in grave condition after obtaining severe injuries to his head and his wife has been called. The authorities are remaining tightlipped on any new leads they have but have once again issued an appeal for anyone who was in the area or who many have any information to come forward to help them solve this crime .

This vicious assault on the family man in the predominantly Irish neighborhood of Adams Village has left local residents reeling. Adams Village is considered by many to be one the safest parts of Dorchester with a very close-knit community. This recent attack has only served to remind the locals of the tragic case of Ciaran O Conghaile, a 36 year old Irish construction worker, originally from Inish Meain in the Aran Islands who was murdered in a botched robbery as he walked home in the same area in October, 2011.

The Boston Police Homicide Unit is still investigating the events of this assault and would like anyone with information to contact Homicide Detectives at 617-343-4470 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800 494-8477. Anyone hesitant to contact police directly, because of their immigration status, can contact the Irish Pastoral Centre at 617 265-5300 or the Irish International Immigrant Centre at 617-542-7654. Any information you have may be critical in solving this crime.
