This photo was taken off Hook Head, in Co. Wexford, was captured by Padraig Whooley sightings are pretty rare. Byron bay in Australia is a great spot for humpbacks.

Mayolady asks if these photos were taken off the west coast... No, they were taken off the south-east coast, off County Wexford's shores. The event was an extremely rare one and the whales have moved on, so no tourist boats. As a holiday snapper, I was looking forward to my time on Fraser Island off the east coast of Australia around the time the whales were due there on their sojourn from Antarctica. Although the locals told us the whales were around and were seen breaching, I never once got to see a whale, not even a fin. These photos are a superb comfort. The tv images are every bit as spectacular. Thanks to Padraig Whooley for taking the time out to go capture these shots. We are indebted to you for their beauty. You can see video of the breaches here >> http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0126/6news_av.html?2688855,null,230 <<
