The world famous visitors’ center of Waterford Crystal shut down today, as 15 remaining workers lost their jobs.

Crowds of people came to bid goodbye to the center, which had hosted 330,000 visitors annually for 25 years.  Waterford Crystal once employed almost 3,000 people in factories at Kilbarry and Dungarvan, according to the Irish Times.

The firm had enjoyed success in the 1980s and 1990s. Americans accounted for more than half of its sales, and this market has been diminishing since 2002, when the US dollar’s value dropped chronically compared with the euro. The firm has struggled with crippling debt and went into bankruptcy last year.

The center was for decades one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, as visitors took tours of the factory and purchased the hand-made cut glass items, which the firm had produced since 1948.  The mayor of Waterford, John Halligan, said its closure marked “a sad day for Waterford,” the Times reported.

Workers said they were grateful for the support of the local community. Employee of 10 years, Eleanor Horan, said on local radio yesterday: “We are absolutely devastated but people have been fantastic; the support we got from all our locals has been absolutely incredible.”

Nicky Coady, who worked as an engraver at the factory for 44 years, said: “While I’m here I’d like to just thank all the people who came in and shook our hands this week.” Coady blamed the closure on Ireland’s politicians’ failure to act.“If the politicians had come out a bit earlier maybe we wouldn’t be closing here today.”

On the company’s website a brief note is posted: “Welcome to the Home of Crystal. Our Factory Tour is temporarily closed.”

I read the article twice because I couldn't believe what I was reading. I still cannot believe it is shut down. Very very sad.
How very short-sighted of the government. Waterford was one of Ireland's world class companies.
How very very sad. Waterford is the very best crystal to drink from. I raise a toast to all the workers. Sláinte
I took the Waterford Crystal Tour in 1999 as most vacationing Americans do. It was a wonderful experience and I treasure the beautiful items I purchased after taking the tour. What a sad day for the people of Waterford. I do hope that some day soon the factory will be able to have tours again, I would love to come visit Ireland again and bring my family this time.
If ever a government subsidy was in order, this is it. Waterford crystal is the hallmark of Ireland and so much of the identity of Ireland is contained in the Waterford factory and product. This was one of the few bastions of craftsmanship and artisans at work. What a shame!!
Heartbreakingly sad. I live in America and we are coping with daily closures. But to hear this from Ireland, that magical island, where you only want good things to happen, this is sad news. The beauty and crafstmanship of Waterford should have gone on forever. Best of luck to all of its employees.
How sad! I remember one trip we brought back a large ashtray that had spontaneously cracked one day and made a trip to the center, showed the piece to one of the staff, she said, "yes, that was flawed" and replaced it at no charge on the spot- happy to say that our children have inherited lots of it from their grandmothers and ours.
The problem here is if this company has any hope in the future that future would need to be in the next 2 or 3 years after that and the skills will be lost forever.
